  • Presented in-person by SHF in partnership with EC, available to all individuals involved in General Performance whether you wish to obtain or update your EC Judging Card(s) or Provincial Official certification. The General Performance Judge clinic will focus on judging and scoring Reining patterns, Hunter rounds, Jumper rounds, Western Riding patterns, Western Horsemanship, Showmanship, Halter and Trail Horse classes. These clinics will also be of great value to any competitor, trainer, coach or parent interested in improving competition results/scores.

AEF/EC Steward Clinic

If you're interested in learning about the roles of a steward at Hunter/Jumper sanctioned competitions and the process to obtain your Officials card, or if you're a current certified steward (AEF and EC) looking to maintain and update your officials status, the Clinic for Hunter and Jumper Stewards is the perfect opportunity for you! Clinician Susan Hawes will provide attendees with valuable information and updates on current AEF and EC rules, as well as proper protocols and standards of practice for stewards officiating at AEF and EC sanctioned competitions.

Athlete Overview (Upload Document)

Upload an overview of your combination so that we may confirm that your training program and athlete performance level are at an appropriate level to complete the evaluation in the NCCP Competition Development Context. You may submit using your own planning documents or use the template provided.

 

The overview must include the following information:

• Human and equine athlete ages & stage of development
• Current performance level
• Training age and history
• Information regarding the number of training sessions and competitions in each period of the season

CQ/EC - Online Officials Hunter/Jumper and Dressage Clinic Series

Online Officials Hunter/Jumper and Dressage Clinic series offered staring January 2023  

 

Cheval Québec, in agreement with Equestrian Canada, will offer a series of clinics for the officials in the Hunter, Jumper and Dressage disciplines starting mid-January 2023. 

 

These clinics, which will count to obtain official credentials in the various disciplines and functions, are meant to support candidate to start their pathway. 

 

People interested to become officials can now register for the different clinics. 

 

**Please note it is mandatory to attend all the sessions of a specific clinic in order for the clinic to count in your pathway to become an official**  

 

• Jumper Judge Clinic with Marie-Hélène Laforest, Senior EC Jumper Judge – January 16, 18 and 23, 2023 from 6PM to 8PM EST. 
  This clinic is offered in French. Cost is $95 taxes included. 

• General Steward Clinic with Martha Worts, Senior EC Steward and FEI1* Jumping Steward – January 25 & 30, February 1st, 2023 from 6PM to 8PM EST. 
  This clinic is offered in English. Cost is $95 taxes included. 

 

• Hunter Judge Clinic with Ann Hodgson, Senior EC Jumper Judge – February 6, 8 and 13, 2023 from 6PM to 8PM EST. 
  This clinic is offered in English. Cost is $95 taxes included.

 

• Introductory Dressage Steward Clinic with Anne Welch, Senior EC Steward and FEI2* Dressage Steward – March 13, 15 and 20, 2023 from 6PM to 8PM EST. 
  This clinic is offered in English. Cost is $95 taxes included . This clinic is reserved only to candidates. 

 

• Hunter/Jumper Course Designer Clinic with Charles Légaré, Senior EC Hunter/Jumper Course Designer – February 15, 20, 22 and 27, 2023 from 6PM to 8PM EST. 
  This clinic is offered in French. Cost is $115 taxes included. 

Clinics will have real-time closed captions translated into another language as chosen by the auditor. Cheval Québec staff member will be in attendance at each session to help on the translation of Q&A.

EC Learn To - English Rider Level 1-6 Evaluator Training

The Equestrian Canada (EC), English Learn to Ride programs begin for junior and senior riders, at Rider Level 1 introducing the basics of horsemanship and rider skills from the first experience to Rider Level 10. The Learn to Ride program is designed to be guided by a Certified and Licensed Instructor or Coach, to ensure that the concepts are clearly understood before the rider progresses to more challenging levels. The program provides an opportunity for riders to progress, demonstrating their skills through a series of increasingly complex written tests, interviews, and under-saddle jump and flat tests. Upon completing this training Licensed and NCCP Certified Instructors and Coaches will be eligible to evaluate for Learn to Ride up to and including level 6 depending on pre-requisites achieved. Evaluators will be provided with all the necessary tools and information to begin testing. 

English Rider Level 1-2

• Must be an Equestrian Canada current certified Instructor or Coach who is trained to evaluate the rider levels.
• May be evaluated by own current certified Instructor or Coach who is trained to evaluate the rider levels.
• May be evaluated by a single evaluator. English Rider Level 3-4
• Must be an Equestrian Canada current certified Coach who is trained to evaluate the rider levels.
• May be evaluated by own current certified Coach who is trained to evaluate the rider levels.
• May be evaluated by the current Instructor with Jump Module (if not their own students) who are trained to evaluate the rider levels.  Note: If candidates are NOT doing the Jump Module, then a current Instructor without the jump module may evaluate (not their own students)
• May be evaluated by a single evaluator.

English Rider Level 5

• Must be an Equestrian Canada current certified Coach who is trained to evaluate the rider levels.
• Evaluators may not evaluate their own students.
• May be evaluated by a single evaluator.

 

English Rider Level 6-7-8

• Must be an Equestrian Canada current certified Coach who is trained to evaluate the rider levels.
• Evaluators are approved only after they have attended two training events. One may be a classroom presentation of the levels and one event must be to shadow a Rider Level evaluation completing their own set of marking papers to the satisfaction of the Mentor Evaluator. The candidate evaluator may shadow two evaluations as an option.
• Evaluators may not evaluate their own students.
• May be evaluated by a single evaluator.

EC Learn To - Western Rider Level 1-4 and Intermediate Rider Basic Training Evaluator Training

The Equestrian Canada (EC), Western Learn to Ride program begins for athletes at Rider Level 1, introducing the basics of horsemanship and rider skills from the first experience to Rider Level 4, and the Intermediate Rider Levels. The Learn to Ride program is designed to be guided by a Certified and Licensed Instructor or Coach, to ensure that the concepts are clearly understood as the athlete progresses to each more challenging level. The program provides an opportunity for athletes to progress by demonstrating their skills through a series of written tests, interviews, and under saddle tests at each level. The aim of the Rider Level evaluator training clinic is to train Instructors and Coaches to understand and detect the requirements for a Rider level candidate to be successful. They will also learn the procedures for setting up an evaluation. Upon completing this training, to become a Rider Level evaluator, Licensed and NCCP Certified Instructors will be eligible to evaluate for Learn to Ride Levels 1-4. Licensed and NCCP Certified Coaches will be eligible to evaluate for Rider Levels 1-4 and Intermediate Rider Basic Training. Evaluators will be provided with all the necessary tools and information to begin testing.

EC Randy Roy Hunter Judge Promotion and Maintenance Clinic

Join renowned EC Senior Hunter Judge and Course Designer, Randy Roy, for a one-day online promotion and maintenance clinic for Hunter Judges. The course will cover hunters, hunt seat equitation, hack, & conformation with the learning outcomes being the following: - Marking cards and using symbols consistently and efficiently. - Identifying faults and strengths in each discipline and how to rate them accordingly. - How to “think like a judge” by engaging in question and answer sessions, & reviewing and discussing RAWF footage. - Being up-to-date on current issues. - Understanding your role as a judge and what makes a for an outstanding judge. Participants will also receive a copy of Randy Roy’s book “You be the Judge” as pre-course preparation material and a hand’s on document to be used throughout the clinic and beyond. AGENDA: The focus of this clinic is on Stewarding at sanctioned Bronze/Silver/Gold and Championship competitions. The clinic format will include a lecture, problem solveing with presentation, mini quizzes, group work and interactive discussion. NCCP Performance Planning and Advanced Practice Planning for Equestrian Sport

This is a Competition Development equestrian specific course. Please note that this course will be delivered in English, although bilingual staff will be present to offer explanations and answer questions in both official languages.

 

In order to achieve peak performance, an athlete’s training program needs to be periodized according to the demands of their sport, as well as their individual development needs. The Performance Planning and Advanced Practice Planning for equestrian sport module allows coaches to reflect on the structure of a yearly plan, and appropriately sequence training and development priorities so as to achieve peak performance.

 

This module is a perfect next-step after the Design an Equestrian Sport Program module. 

 

After completing this course, you will be able to:

• Perform a thorough analysis of the demands of your athletes’ sport at the elite (high-performance) level;
• Outline a program structure based on training and competition opportunities;
• Identify appropriate measures for promoting athlete development within your own program;
• Integrate yearly training priorities in your own program;
• Organize and sequence training priorities and objectives on a weekly basis to optimize adaptations; 
• Evaluate the ability of your athletes/team to perform up to their potential in competition;
• Identify the factors that affect practice planning;
• ensure that practice plans are consistent with the microcycles and phases of which they are part;
• sequence exercises in a practice so that their order is consistent with the research on sequencing;
• develop a plan for training technical and tactical abilities over a microcycle; and
• develop a plan for a microcycle that helps athletes taper before a competition.

OE Coach Developer Meeting

This is a free 1.5 hour monthly webinar format meeting.  Exclusively for EC/NCCP Certified OE Coach Developers made possible by Mike King and CapriCMW.  Each month we will address some of the questions, concerns and challenges relating to the EC Coaching Program and provide up-to-date information.

Upcoming Para-Equestrian Education for ALL Clinics in Western Canada

Join Clive Milkins, Technical Advisor for the Equestrian Canada (EC) Para-Dressage program for one of twoPara-Equestrian clinics being held this November in Warmen, SK, and Cochrane, AB. These clinics are designed to educate attendees on topics associated with coaching riders with an impairment and to encourage EC certified coaches to include riders with impairments in their training and competitive programs.

Each of the clinics are offered as one- or two-day sessions with a two-day discount with a maximum of 25 participants. All four clinics are open to coaches, officials, athletes, volunteers, and parents to attend.

To obtain a vulnerable sector search, you must contact your local police department. This search differs from a regular Criminal Record Check as it specifically verifies elements relevant for people working with vulnerable populations and may take several weeks to obtain. Most police departments require a letter from the requesting organization to complete the check.

Yearly Training Plan (Document Upload)

In order to engage in the certification process, you must currently be working with a Yearly Training Plan (YTP) and submit it for review to ensure the plan is at an appropriate level of development to effectively participate in the performance planning training module and/or proceed directly to evaluation.You may submit your plan in whichever format you feel most comfortable with. A copy of the template used in the Performance Planning training module is available for download.

 

If you are applying to participate in the cohorted program, please include a copy of the plan you are using for the current season. It will serve as a baseline upon for you build upon as complete the training throughout the cohort.

If you are submitting for the purposes of going direct to evaluation, this is the plan you will be including in your portfolio and that will be accessed as part of the certification process.

Conferences and Symposiums

Conferences and symposiums offering relevant professional development for coaches in the equestrian industry are offered by organizations other than Equestrian Canada.  You will be directed to third party websites to obtain more information and register for these events.

NCCP Long-Term Equestrian Development

This module will provide participants with an explanation and exploration of ‘What is LTED’ and where both athletes and coaches fit.  Participants will understand that the LTED Framework defines optimal training, competition, and recovery programs based on biological age rather than chronological age, therefore based on human growth and development principles.  Along with encouraging an athlete-centred approach to equestrian development, athletes with a disability will see how they can achieve success and enjoyment in the sport.  There will be discussions surrounding optimal windows of trainability and training vs growth and development, training vs competition, and recommended competition to training ratios and development stages. 

When registering for this module, you will receive complimentary access to the Sport for Life Society's Introduction to Long-Term Development in Sport and Physical Activity eLearning course.

NCCP Analyzing Beginner Equestrian Performance

Analyzing Beginner Equestrian Performance teaches the equestrian instructor and coach how to apply a basic framework to detect and correct skill errors in beginner participants. 

 

Upon completion, you will be able to: 

• Detect common errors and prioritize them for correction 

• Analyze performance errors and help beginner participants understand and make corrections 

NCCP Plan an Equestrian Practice

Plan an Equestrian Practice helps coaches develop the skills needed to plan a practice (lesson) that meets the standard of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and to develop an Emergency Action Plan.  This module prepares coaches to plan safe and effective lessons.  The Equestrian Canada NCCP Plan an Equestrian Practice module will prepare you to:

• Explain the importance of logistics in the development of a practice (lesson) plan
• Establish an appropriately structured lesson and identify appropriate activities in accordance with EC's LTED Framework

Rookie Riders 1 Instructor Training

The fun-filled, active workshop focused on the instruction of fundamental skills and group management skills in a non-equestrian environment.  At the completion of the program, instructor candidates will:

• Be familiar with the ground and barrel skills in the program
• Have practiced performing and teaching the majority of the skills included in the program
• Able to manage a large group of participants and lead small group activities using Rookie Riders lesson plans
• Be confident in their ability to deliver the Rookie Riders program to participants in the FUNDamentals and Learn to Train stages of development

Workshop participants will be given access to the PLAYBuilder App for a period of 1 year which includes access to pre-built lesson plans, instructional videos and other support resources as part of the workshop package.  The workshop involves a high degree of physical activity, instructor candidates should be physically fit, capable of performing most skills in the Rookie Riders program.

Rookie Riders 2 Instructor Training

The second part of Rookie Riders Coach training will teach coaches to incorporate a horse(s) into the Rookie Riders program - this is for those Rookie Riders coaches teaching in equestrian facilities.

Rookie Riders Facilitator Training

Training to become a Rookie Riders Learning Facilitator to be able to train other coaches. To complete this training you must meet the following requirements:

• Completed Rookie Riders Instructor Training
• Experience running the Rookie Riders program
• NCCP Certified Instructor or Coach
• Ability to demonstrate the majority of skills in the program
• Experience working with physical literacy programs is an asset

First time application for EC NCCP certified coaches who wish to coach outside of Canada.

Equine Clean Sport is designed to help coaches develop practices and understand the use of medications that will lead to an Equine Clean Sport.

The Performance Planning for High-Performance Training course is  part of the NCCP High Performance 1 certification program and is designed to enable coaches to:

Prevention and Recovery – Equine is designed to help High Performance 1 Coaches develop effective equine conditioning programs specific to their discipline. 

 

Upon completion, you will be able to: 

• Understand the effect of a conditioning program, taking into account the horse’s various physiological systems 

• Recognize the link between optimal performance and discipline specific conditioning 

• Develop, implement and analyze discipline-specific conditioning objectives and programs  

Basic Mental Skills

Basic Mental Skills (Multisport) is designed to help coaches recognize when athletes need some help with their mental skills and know how to help them improve these skills. 

 

Upon completion, you will be able to: 

• Help athletes be mentally prepared for competition 

• Integrate mental-preparation strategies into lessons 

NCCP Advanced Practice Planning

Advanced Practice Planning (Multisport) examines the impact of daily training sequencing and the manipulations that can affect training outcomes. This is an ideal follow-up to NCCP Planning a Practice. Coaches are advised to take NCCP Performance Planning before taking NCCP Advanced Practice Planning. 

 

Upon completion, you will be able to: 

• Identify the factors that affect practice planning 

• Ensure that practice plans are consistent with the applicable microcycles and phases  

• Sequence practice exercises appropriately 

• Develop a microcycle plan for training technical and tactical abilities that helps athletes taper before a competition 

 

This course is delivered by the Provincial/Territorial Coaching Representatives of the Coaching Association of Canada.  You will be taken to a 3rd party website to register.

NCCP Coaching and Leading Effectively

Coaching and Leading Effectively is designed to help coaches learn how to take leadership action to improve the conditions that support athlete performance. 

 

After finishing this module, coaches will have drafted a personalized coaching philosophy. In particular, they’ll be able to: 

• Develop a coaching philosophy based on the reflections of values and how and why one coaches.  
• Demonstrate behaviours to create an inclusive, safe, positive sport environment 
• Demonstrate an understanding of the leadership role in the broader sport community  
• Develop opportunities to foster a culture based on excellence, positive performance, and growth in sport  

NCCP Developing Athletic Abilities

Developing Athletic Abilities (Multisport) is designed to help coaches oversee training programs and make recommendations for athletes at the appropriate stages.   

 

Upon completion, you will be able to: 

• Identify the athletic abilities that support performance within your sport 

• Interpret the results of athletic & fitness tests  

• Provide guidance in the athlete’s overall training plan so that athletic development and safety are optimized  

NCCP Make Ethical Decisions

Making Ethical Decisions (Multisport) is designed to equip instructors and coaches to handle ethical situations with confidence and surety.  

 

Upon completion of this course, the Coaching Association of Canada's $85 On-line Evaluation Fee for Make Ethical Decisions will be waived.  Successful completion of the evaluation is necessary for coach certification in any NCCP program.

NCCP Managing Conflict

NCCP Managing Conflict introduces new and experienced coaches to the impact of conflict on sport in their day-to-day coaching practice. This module teaches key skills for achieving positive outcomes using effective conflict management techniques. 

 

Learning outcomes  

After completing the NCCP Managing Conflict training module, coaches will be able to: 

• Identify common sources of conflict in sport 

• Take steps to prevent and resolve conflict resulting from misinformation, miscommunication or misunderstanding 

• Listen and speak for themselves in conflict situations to maintain positive and healthy relationships with athletes, parents, guardians, officials, other coaches and administrators 

NCCP Prevention and Recovery (Human Athlete)

 The NCCP Prevention and Recovery module provides strategies and techniques to prevent injury, while also improving performance. These 2 concepts are closely connected. Strategies that help with 1 of the concepts, directly influence the other.  

This workshop supports coaches in preventing injury. It does not prepare coaches to intervene medically with an injured athlete. It’s highly recommended that coaches take a first-aid course or have someone who has first-aid training be on site with them at all times during practices. 

 

Learning outcomes

After finishing this module, coaches will be able to design a personalized Prevention Action Plan (PAP), which will enhance their athletes’ performance and assist in preventing injuries. In particular, coaches will be able to:  

• Identify common injuries in sport  
• Identify prevention and recovery strategies for common injuries in sport  
• Design and implement appropriate warm-ups and cool-downs  
• Choose skills and drills that help athletes perform skills correctly  
• Support athletes’ return to sport through awareness and proactive leadership  
• Implement recovery and regeneration techniques to maintain or return to optimal performance in training and competition  
• Provide appropriate information and guidance on hydration, nutrition and sleep that will each contribute to optimal performance in training and competition  

NCCP Psychology of Performance

The goal of the NCCP Psychology of Performance module is to support coaches in developing mental skills in their day-to-day practice as a coach.

 

*Note: There are similarities between this module and the NCCP Basic Mental Skills module. While the NCCP Basic Mental Skills module provides an overview to mental skill development and application, this module covers the knowledge of mental skill development at a deeper level and provides more opportunities for coaches to practise. Both modules follow a similar structure, yet they cover different depths of applying the development of mental skills.

 

Learning Outcomes

• Identify the focus skills that will help athletes achieve their goals in training and in competition
• Train athletes in the focus skills that will help them achieve their goals in training and in competition
• Work with athletes or teams to identify appropriate outcome, performance and process goals
• Use debriefing skills to work with athletes and assess their performance in training and in competition

NCCP Teaching and Learning

Teaching and Learning (Multisport) is designed to help coaches optimize student learning by implementing effective teaching methods and tools into lessons.

• Assess your own beliefs regarding effective teaching 

• Analyze certain coaching situations to determine if they promote learning 

• Create conditions that promote learning and self-esteem  

Empower +

NCCP Empower+ is an intense and thought-provoking workshop that will teach you how to enhance the well-being of your athletes and be a positive role model in the world of sport. After completing the NCCP Empower+ module, you will be able to: • critically reflect on your own experiences in sport; • recognize the potential for, and presence of maltreatment in sport; • determine when and how to intervene when you observe or suspect maltreatment; • apply the six-step NCCP Decision-making Model to make ethical decisions related to maltreatment in sport; and • identify the conditions related to creating positive and healthy sport experiences that enhance the well-being of athletes in your care.

NCCP Core Training for Coach Evaluators

NCCP Core Training for Coach Evaluators is designed to help Coach Evaluators learn how to assess, evaluate, debrief, and follow up with coaches to help them achieve certification. The Core Training for all Coach Evaluators must be completed to progress on the Coach Evaluator pathway. 

NCCP Core Training for Learning Facilitators

NCCP Core Training for Learning Facilitators is designed to help Learning Facilitators acquire the appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitudes to facilitate learning sessions that produce skilled and knowledgeable coaches. This training must be completed in order to progress on the Learning Facilitator pathway. 

NCCP Core Training for Master Coach Developers

NCCP Core Training for Master Coach Developers is designed to help Master Coach Developers learn how to select, train, evaluate, support and mentor NCCP Coach Developers (Learning Facilitators, Coach Evaluators, and other Master Coach Developers). This training must be completed to progress on the Master Coach Developer pathway. 

NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills

The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Fundamental Movement Skills Workshop, presented by TeamSnap, provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental movement skills and the core-competencies of the NCCP, with the help of significant hands-on activities. Through this interactive workshop, participants gain the ability to: Detect and correct basic errors for fundamental movement skills in participants so they have a choice to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle; Apply a teaching process to promote the development of fundamental movement skills; Adapt fundamental movement skills for participants with intellectual, physical, sensory, or behavioural disabilities; Lead activities that will promote the development of fundamental movement skills in a safe, responsible manner while interacting with others; and Provide stage-appropriate feedback to encourage and develop fundamental movement skills in participants.

NCCP Mentorship

The NCCP Mentorship module prepares individuals for their roles as mentors with clarity of purpose and confidence in their actions. The training reaffirms and strengthens their abilities and skills as a mentor, while expanding upon the mentor’s knowledge of the mentoring process. Completing the training will provide the mentor with the necessary standards and protocols to implement mentoring within their coaching community.

 

After completing the NCCP Mentorship module, you will be able to:

• understand the concept of mentoring;
• understand the process of cognitive coaching;
• acquire and use communication skills required to be an effective mentor;
• use the three steps of the mentoring process.
